Becki Svare has made a radical decision: She won’t buy any more Christmas presents. It started a few years ago as an experiment with her extended family. The holiday season began as it often did, with a dozen family members drawing names out of a hat. But instead of buying gifts for each other, they had to come up with a meaningful experience to share with their designated person. Suggested price: $20 to $25. [ reference article below ]
She, Ms., assuming she is married, Mrs. Svare has come up with a “radical” concept to buy experiences rather than gifts. Or, gifts of experiences.
But vowing to cut back on presents is one thing — actually doing so can be a years-long process. [ reference article below ]
What a novel idea. Wish I, as a preacher of holiness, would have thought of giving all the loose change throughout the year to the poor on Christmas. Of the church coming together to pour the money into a collection bin and give it away to another charity. Then have children, and adults, design poor boxes for the coming year to collect loose coins and cash for next year’s Christmas event. The joy of watching all create and design the coming collection boxes, made mostly out of oatmeal tubes was in and of itself a treasure to behold.
Oh, but wait …I, Timothy Williams did think and do such until ran out of the City of Enumclaw. Everyone, I guess, everyone has their favorite event. Some desire events that are acts of righteousness, others of evil hearts acts of open hostility toward such good deeds. So it was at the first Christmas, so it is now.
No matter what sinful men might do may your Christmas be a blessed one.
In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” (Acts 20:35)
Note in the article that everything still comes back to self – to themselves. Until a person is freed by Jesus as they daily carry their cross everything they do will come back to themselves. This is why so many including Enumclaw Officials slandered me – they cannot even imagine – believe that a person can do something without it coming back to themselves. Such is the damnable position of unrepentant sinners. They think everyone is like themselves because, well, for them, everything, including all measurements of right and wrong come back to what is in their hearts.
The worse of this lot are the so-called Christians who claim to know God but in not really knowing a holy God they judge those few who do know a holy God as guilty. They are the most miserable of prosecutor and jury a person could ever face.
To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted. They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good. (Titus 1:15-16)
Bonus Wisdom: [righteous point]
A few years ago, Campbell surprised the family with new luggage — and a cruise to Alaska. Last year, she took her grandsons on a four-day trip to Chicago. She makes photo books for her daughters and bakes cookies for her son-in-law. [ reference article below ]
This is exactly why Jesus came and died – to set us free from the slavery of self. To free self from the need to get a “four-day trip”, “cruise to Alaska” or even “new luggage.” Whether gifts or experiences it is all the same to the Living God. Selfishness.
It takes God’s power being in one’s life for this to happen, but, praise be to the Living God there is the power to be free.
Jesus came to free everyone from the lust to get anything, tangible or intangible for ourselves. To find the joy in being a servant of all. A servant that doesn’t expect anything from anything for the joy is found in being like God – selfless love.
But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. (Romans 6:22)
The greatest of gift awaits you opening the package.
Your choice is even now passing you by.
Why not give Jesus, after all that is what Christ-mass is about, your most valued treasured – yourself.
How you ask?
Follow the star.
On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. (Matthew 2:11)
If you reads the whole Washington Post article note well that there is 1 common element. That element is to avoid any kind of suffering, indeed, discomfort with the giving up of traditional Xmas gifts.
It is the same element that is avoided through-out the false Christianity known as Cultural Christianity. In order for God to free you from self you will have to suffer as Jesus directs.
Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin. As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God. (1 Peter 4:1-2)
