It’s doubtful that any mom ever yelled at her kid to turn down, never mind turn off, Hotel California. And maybe that’s how you sell 32 million copies and counting. – Let’s Talk About Hotel California: Great or Terrible? The Eagles’ soft-rock pinnacle remains among the most divisive albums ever. By Michael Salfino
The Eagles Hotel California for what it really is, or is not, for whatever The Eagles think it is or was, whether just for money or some kind of Satanic inspired sweet song of luring is this: It certainly poisons the soul with the serpents paralyzing venom of the victim’s self-absorbing self-pity.
It plays to the tune that all is meaningless, all is hopeless, all is in vain.
Which, of course, is all true.
What is not true, what lie the song sings about, that life is meaningless leaves out is that there is a way of escape if you really want to check-out.
To the play of 32 million copies sold it is clear we love our self-pity, our victim-hood, our own real pains or imagined sufferings. Self, self and still more self until each of us becomes nothing more than complete self-centeredness. It is a black-mood becoming total blackness.
Jesus once asked a man if “he wanted to be made well?” The man only made excuses instead of answering the question. In fact, the man never answered the question and Jesus had to force upon the man healing. In the same way, many love their real, or imaged abuses, slights, insults and would be rather be known for their back-slaps in life than letting the Living God give them the abundant life.
Oh, the man you ask, well, once Jesus rebuked the man for returning to a life of sin, after having been healed, went out and ratted on Jesus to the lawyers and religious leaders of the day. Now there is real thanks for ya. You can read the event at John 5:7 in the New Testament.
The point today is that one can check-out of Hotel California and leave but only by following Jesus.
Once the check-out is complete an individual can put off the old self of self-pity and put on the brand new self that is like God in true righteousness and holiness.
You can’t get much lovelier than that in this meaningless sinful world.
You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. (Ephesians 4:22-24)
We know O’Lord it is true that without your power we can never check out of The Hotel California.
Thank-you God for in Jesus you killed the beast for us who are powerless.
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. (Romans 5:6)
